Hungry ? Be Still !

Mothers have this unique ability to precisely figure out when you have just disobeyed, no matter how well you try to cover up and put up a “I have no idea what you are talking about” face ! Phew !!

If you drive down to my house, just round the corner is this fast food stall, which according to me, is the best place in town for a particular variety of fried item which I shall leave unnamed. Now we know that all junk food, however tasty it might be is unhealthy. But somehow each time I cross that stretch, there is this sense of deep urge to quickly grab a plate and relish it, even though there are strict orders from my mom to avoid it. And the moment I step inside home, she figures it out and I have no idea how !

Whether you agree or not, each of us have our own hungers – physical, emotional and spiritual. We are designed and wired in such a way that till that hunger is satisfied we can’t move on to things of higher purposes. In the secular world this is explained by “Maslow’s Theory of Needs”. Dig into the scriptures and you will find that Jesus takes this further and links hunger and thirst to righteousness [Matt 5:6]. We are restless till we find “that which will” satisfy that deep hunger in us. Most often we go to any means to gratify that need, knowing full and well that the things the world offers to fulfill that hunger is deadly and harmful.

Maybe it’s that sinful habit that you indulge in, or it’s that addiction to work which is eating away into your relationships at home, or it could even be your obsession to excel more and more, to climb up the corporate ladder, or to keep working harder driven by the greed to make more money. 

Jack Higgins, the famous author, recognized for “The Eagle has landed” was asked, “What do you now know, which you wished you had known much earlier in life”. He replied, “I wish I had known then, that when you get to the top, there is nothing there !” The loneliest moment in life is when you have just experienced that which you thought will give you the ultimate pleasure and it has let you down.

You need to recognize that our hungers remain unsatisfied when we fill it with worldly food. Only God can fill that deepest longing in our hearts and in-turn our hungers. The great theologian, Augustine, once said, “Our hearts are restless until we find our rest in thee”

So today would you stop and be still, and allow God to fill the hunger in you ?

Busy ? Be Still !

Jumping from meeting to meeting, scheduled back to back; Keeping track of updates almost every other minute; working with a constant pressure to perform well; this has pretty much been life in the last one year. In the midst of all this I realized how my priorities got mixed up and I let slip away the more important or rather the most important thing !

In-spite of the busy weekdays God has enabled me to serve in ministry work among young people in different parts of the country. Often my weekends are more packed and busy than the weekdays. Before long I realized how I was facing a burn-out and that there was something missing, until I came across this very familiar scripture passage that each of us would have read many times – Jesus visiting Mary and Martha.

The fact that Mary chose to “Be still” sitting at Jesus’ feet, forgetting about all the other seemingly important work that kept Martha busy, earned her the approval of Jesus. We need to understand that waiting in God’s presence to hear from Him, to be sensitive to His voice, is far more important than all the worldly things that seem to fight for our attention.

I found that when I dedicated the best part of the day, first thing in the morning, to spend time alone with God, it not only strengthened and prepared me for the day but also enriched the whole day. Things seem to automatically fall in place when priorities were set right. As a child of God we need to honor Him with our time.

Martin Luther, when once asked what his plans, for the following day were, answered: “Work, work, from early until late. In fact, I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.”

If anyone was busy, it was Martin Luther. That guy was leading a spiritual revolution! He was preaching, writing, pastoring, translating the Bible into German, being a dad, and being a husband. He was incredibly, overwhelmingly busy. His calendar was always full. And yet, in spite of his incredible workload, he found it absolutely necessary to pray. He had to meet with God before he met with the cares of the day. He would not dive into his day without first being refreshed by the Lord. He knew that he couldn’t serve the Lord well without first asking God for help.

Would you chose to meet God and “Be Still” in His presence everyday ?

Confused ? Be Still !

It was a bright Sunday morning and I was all excited and ready to go to church. This Sunday I was at Seattle and had to meet up with a friend and go to church together. The church was almost an hour’s journey away from Downtown. As usual I promptly verified the bus timings and was at the bus stop well ahead of time to make sure I don’t miss the bus ‘cause I hate going late to church. As the clock kept ticking past the excepted time of arrival of this particular bus I grew anxious and became a little restless. Generally “King and County” bus service never runs late ! But seemed like today it was an exception.

The questions running across my mind – “did I actually see the wrong timings and I missed the bus ?”, “Why would the bus come late when I want to go to church on time ?”, “Is not God mindful of my good intentions ? ”, “should I forget about going to church today and just go back home?” I was quite upset and confused as to why something like this would happen on a happy Sunday morning and ruin the entire day. Nevertheless, I chose to let out a small but earnest prayer from my heart, asking God to intervene and help me. And I chose to wait for just a few more minutes before giving up !

Lo and behold, I could see at the end of that long road, the sun’s rays reflecting off the windshield and  glittering glass – it was the bus ! Finally I let out a sigh of relief at the sight of the approaching bus. But my happiness was short lived - I realized that the bus which was now right in front of me, is the one which takes a slightly different route. With no other choice I quickly hoped in. My disappointment only grew bigger. Already the bus was running late and now the route is different.

All these negative thoughts came to a full stop when this bus went over a bridge crossing the freeway underneath, which was a “Stand-Still” with traffic jam – the route which the actual bus I was waiting for would have taken. Suddenly there was this great sense of gratefulness in my heart, that I got into this bus. God is interested in the very small things of our lives and He is involved in them actively. If only we will “Be Still” and trust Him for his guidance, we will see that He is always faithful. 

Are you confused and worried about those small things piled up today ? Would you be still and allow God to intervene in those situations ? Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you.

Let the serenity prayer be your prayer today :

God grant me the serenity

to accept the things I cannot change;

courage to change the things I can;

and wisdom to know the difference.

Under an Umbrella

Rains are quite unpredictable…bless the guy who invented umbrellas ! oh the feeling of walking in the rain under an umbrella…the need of a shelter over our head the moment the first few drops start falling…almost like an involuntary response, the brain instructs the eyes to look for shelter and the body invokes our every other faculty in reflex – the hands go over the head or lift any possible inanimate object to protect us from the showers and the legs sprint towards the nearest shelter available. But yes there have been days in my childhood when there was not even a hint of anything like this. The moment it rains, the first thing I wanted to do was run out of the house and get wet !

It was a fine day, the rains had just flushed out the streets clean…the roads and the pavements spic and span and the sun brightly shining. But during the raining season, in this part of the country, you dare not go out without an umbrella. The sun will always betray you and prove your intuition wrong !

Downtown, round the corner, I was waiting for a friend and all of a sudden, lo and behold – the mighty showers of the west coast. It started pouring cats and dogs, in-spite of being the owner of a fairly large,    in-fact a family size umbrella, I was still getting wet. Now you need to understand that here, it rains in a particular angle, influenced by the strong winds that accompany. So unless you hold the umbrella in the right angle against the wind and continuously keep adjusting to the direction of the winds, you will definitely not get back home dry !

Anxious that my friend had not yet turned up and fighting against the urge to quickly walk back home, I was getting a little agitated. Suddenly, just out of nowhere, this gentleman with a smiling face, blatantly, without any courtesy, squeezed-in under my umbrella. For a moment I was just stunned…totally ! I could not react or respond to what just happened. For the kind of person I am, I just could not accept it at all.

But somehow…quiet strangely I did not lose my cool. Here I was in a foreign land, dint know the local language, standing in the rain, with a stranger under my umbrella – have never been in a situation like this before.

Knowing that the prospects of getting kicked out from under the umbrella was high, given the kind of entry he made, this man quickly breaks into a conversation with me with the same broad smile on his face.  As I continued on with this conversation, suddenly there was this deep urge in my heart to somehow tell him about Jesus. I knew that this was from God, ‘cos I would never dare to do that. But I kept suppressing this thought for fear of how this man would react. I kept fighting within myself whether to break the good news to him that Jesus loves him or just remain silent and get over with this situation.

Before I could come to a conclusion, and as the rains subsided, the man walked away, thanking me for sharing the umbrella. I stood there, grappling with what had just happened in a short span – I was standing, it started raining, I open my umbrella, a man walks in, I had time to talk to him and before too long he walks away.

For the rest of the day I could not stop thinking about this incident. Maybe this man will never again get an opportunity to hear about the savior. Maybe it was a God given chance for me to share about His love with a stranger. Maybe that man was going through something very difficult in life, which would take a God like mine to provide a solution and that’s why He allowed this man to walk right into my umbrella…

Have you ever faced such situations in your everyday routine life, where God brings people into your life so that you can share about His love to them ? Maybe it is the taxi driver, or a co-passenger in train. It could be that vegetable vendor you meet every other day or the maid who helps you with the household chores. I don’t know…it could even be a stranger on the road asking for directions or a waiter in a restaurant. It might be that colleague who shares the same desk with you in office or even your boss !

 The point I want to make is this – are you ready to talk about Jesus to the people around ?

We need to remind ourselves that it is a command the Lord Jesus himself has given us - to preach the good news. Surprisingly, God brings about these insignificant and small situations around us to see if we would share the goodness of His love that we have tasted or walk away rejecting the opportunity.

“Everyday they pass me by,

Empty people filled with care,
Headed who knows where?

Living fear to fear.

Only Jesus hears.

In the part of the country I live in, torrential rains lash out their furry for almost four months at a stretch. You hardly get to see the sun during these days. But people here are so used to this kind of weather that in-spite of the heavy rains, normal life still goes on as usual.

The monsoon has just set in and the weather is quite pleasant though it keeps raining the whole day. I commute by bus to office very morning. I am a creature of habit – I take the same bus every day, at the same time and occupy the same seat, on the left aisle, right in the front. Something, though not unusual, caught my attention this morning!

I was not able to clearly see anything through the windshield of the bus as it was raining heavily and the water hitting the glass made it impossible for me to see the oncoming traffic. But the driver’s side of the same windshield was clear and he was able to drive the bus through traffic safely. The windshield of the bus had just one wiper unlike that of a car, which has two. This wiper made sure that the water hitting the glass did not block the vision for the driver.

It was the same windshield, but my side of the glass showed me a very blurred image of what was in front but the driver’s portion of the glass was wiped clean and he could see clearly! It did not matter whether I could see or not, ‘cause the person who was at the wheel could see what was coming on to us and it was he, who was navigating. I reach office safely.

As I was pondering over this, I realized how even in our lives, we don’t get to see what is in store ahead of us.

Will I get through that interview ? How am I going to complete this work ? Will I be able to provide for my family this month ? Will that promotion come through ?

We don’t see the future. We don’t know what might happen the very next minute ! We get anxious and worried. We fail to enjoy each new day the Lord graciously adds to our lives by fretting about things beyond our control.

Let us rest assured because the one who is at the wheel can clearly see through all that seems so blurred to us. He will navigate us through the stormy seas and bring us ashore !

We need to be wrapped by the calm assurance and faith that made the shepherd king say, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want”.

Each time the dark clouds of doubt seem to overshadow you and the fetters of fear seem to grip you, sing along boldly with Gaither, “Because He lives I can face tomorrow, because He lives all fear is gone. Because I know, yes I know, He hold my future; And life is worth a living, just because He lives !

The Unchanging...

It was a pleasant evening , and I chose to be at the beach... I was enjoying the cool and gentle breeze on the west coast. The sun had finished its routine for the day and was setting, another few minutes and it would go back to its resting place. They say it shines very bright once again just before it disappears into the horizon…The sky was reflecting the beautiful colors of the rays of the sun, I was amazed at the different shapes of the clouds.  To me each resembled the shape of some real life object or the other…some were like animals , some like ships while others like trees and so on…and all of a sudden one thing struck me – these were changing their shapes constantly though slowly !

The clouds were slowly moving and in course their shapes were changing. Once that which was a beautiful bird turned into some unrecognizable abstract structure, while still others resembled other objects, which weren’t as beautiful as the previous shapes.

Disappointment crept in, for a moment’s time I was rejoicing at the beauty of these cute clouds against the colorful sunset and the gentle ocean below reflecting it, but soon things so drastically changed, the clouds disintegrated, the sun was dimming down and the tides grew stronger causing the once gentle waves to roar…

Aren’t things in our life sometimes so similar to this…situations change, maybe for good or maybe for bad. Relationships that once gave us hope and love, may have now come to the brink of breaking up or maybe it isn’t there at all anymore! People whom we trusted changed like the shadows and moved on in life, leaving us behind. Or is it something dear that you held on to and it has let you down…

The world around us is a rapidly changing one. Nothing in it remains the same. And people of this world are like chameleons. They adapt to situations and change their stance to suit their comfort. Friends- they come and go. They are here today and there tomorrow and might very well not be there at all the day after.

On the contrary, there are things in life which we so desperately want to be changed and lo - they just don’t seem to! You try everything you can, you run, scream, fight, stand upside down, and yet they remain the same…Phew !!! Can we survive in a world like this? Is there any hope for us in situations like these ? a depressing job...a broken relationship...a deteriorating lifestyle…a crumbling financial base…emotional turmoil…a betrayed soul ???  

In an ever changing world there is one who is never changing !

He is the same yesterday today and forever. Heaven and earth may pass away but His words will remain! He is not man to lie nor the son of man to change His mind. His promises never fail. In Him there is strength for today and hope for tomorrow.

If you are tossed to and fro by this ever changing world, hold on to the never changing one – Jesus, the unchanging!

To my dearest brother,

First things first…

Life always takes us into newer plains. Sometimes it’s exciting and makes us happy but at times it might be scary and will make us anxious. But then the only hope with which you and I can move forward is this assurance we have – Because He lives I can face tomorrow! I know He holds my future and life is worth a living just because He lives. 

It’s been more than a year since I completed my bachelor’s degree. Now as I look back at those days I spent at college, there are many pleasant memories but I can’t deny the fact that I do regret a few things- things which I now feel, given a chance I would set them right!

But it’s all over! You and I know we can never change our past but we can always make use of our present to change our future.

Even as you get ready to venture into this new phase in your life, I would like to suggest a few important things which I urge you not to overlook but take it to heart.

It is imperative that we set our priorities right when we begin a new phase in our life. And it’s important that we take time to work this out so that we are sure we’re heading in the right direction.

For you – its college life! I would like to pass on the advice my parents gave me on priorities while I was at college.

First – God

Second – Family

Third - Academics

Fourth – Ministry

Before I explain these to you briefly, let me tell you that if you mess up with these, you will end up messing your college life. I don’t intend to scare you but would like to exhort you with this.

First – God

By this I mean your personal relationship with Jesus. Just as the Bible tells us “Seek first His kingdom and His Righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you”. Make sure you have worked out a schedule for your regular quiet time and your prayer time. Ideally this should be your first slot in the morning as your start a new day. It is very refreshing to spend time with the Lord Jesus before we go out into the world with our own commitments. You will find strength for the entire day and His grace will sustain you through the rest of the day.

Second – Family

The only people who will stand by you at the end of the day, no matter what you have done or how you have messed up, will be your family! The Bible is very clear about the fact that we need to honor our parents. The best way to honor them is by obeying them. I can vouch for this with all my heart that it is a blessing to obey our parents. I am sure you will quickly make a lot of good friends who will become very close to you. But never let them take the priority your family deserves in your life by trading your relationships.

Third - Academics

This is the most important thing that needs to always be on the top of your mind. Never forget the purpose for which you have come to this new place – college! The sole purpose of you coming to college is to excel in your academics and bring out the best in you. You need to understand the fact that today we live in a world which is highly competitive and onlythe best survive. So do not let anything else occupy your mind other than academics while you are at college. Yes you can involve in all social, extra-curricular activities but not at the cost of your academics. This is another way in which we can honor God and our family – by excelling in your academics.

Fourth – Ministry

In obedience to God’s word it is our duty to tell others about Jesus and bring them to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Find out ways in which you can do this, prayerfully. Always consult your parents before you get involved in a fellowship/church. But as far as I know, the best way in which you can attract other to Jesus is by living an exemplary life. You never know, your life might be the only Bible your friends and others at college might ever get to read. So be extremely careful about how you go about things at college because people are always watching you.

Having said all this I would only like to remind you that we are weak but He is strong. We stumble but He helps us get up again. I can’t assure you that the road ahead is going to be smooth but He will be there even through life’s perilous roads. Fear Not! Father Knows! Ask Him!

Do you Lie ? 

  Johnny, Johnny ! 

 Yes papa… Eating sugar ?

 No papa… Telling lies ?

 No papa… Open your mouth ! Ha haha!

I am sure that on reading these lines, your mind is flooded with childhood memories, but does it also ring a bell, alarming you of the message they convey???

I still remember this incident which took place when I was a kid. As a family we were going on a long summer vacation. My mom had just cleaned the refrigerator and emptied it. We usually switched off the refrigerator while we are away on long trips. The ice cubes that were removed from it were dumped in a vessel. I was fascinated by those ice cubes and wanted to take them but mom strictly told me not to.

Finally when we were about to leave our house for the railway station, after the family prayer, my dad asks me if I took the ice cubes. I promptly denied! To my utter shock I was caught. I had filled my shirt pocket and trouser pockets with those ice cubes and they melted, wetting my clothes, giving away my secret act. How foolish I was!
You just smiled right???

Years later this incident kept me thinking as to how easily I could lie promptly. It was a hard realization, that even after so many years I still did find myself in situations like that, where lying was so easy and in a subtle way it had kept me its slave, till I took a conscious decision to overcome it with the strength that Jesus assures, when we confess and ask Him to help us.

 Do you also find yourself in this trap today?
 Do circumstances in your work place demand you to speak lies?
 Do you find it so convenient to get your work done by lying, thinking its ok?
Maybe the world around us makes it look like lying is actually not an issue, as long as it helps someone and that “a white lie is ok!” But let me remind you of what the Bible has to tell about ‘lying’.

  Warnings:
• “The Lord detests lying lips, but He delights in men who are truthful” Prov 12:22
• “You destroy those who tell lies” Ps 5:6
• “But…the liars – their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur.” Rev 21:8

Remember what happened to Elisha’s servant, Gehazi, when he lied to his master? The Bible records that the same leprosy that left Naaman, stuck to Gehazi and he became a leper! II Kings 5:25-27. This is how serious the Bible is about lying. And it is sad, how we have taken it so lightly today. Yes it’s true we are living in the grace period, but we cannot afford to take God’s grace for granted.


Blessings:
• “Whoever of you loves life and desire to see many good days , Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies.” Ps 34:12, 13.
• “Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live in your holy hill? He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous Who speaks the truth from his heart.” Ps 15:1,2.

Yes-Yes No-No Principle
I would like draw your attention to a simple and effective solution the Bible gives us to abstain from lying. Hold on to this and practice it.

Simply, let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’, ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

 ~ Mat 5:37 

This is given by Jesus when He talks about taking oaths. But then if you can practice this truly, you will find that there is no more opportunity for lying. Make a firm and conscious decision that you will not flinch or succumb to the situation, no matter how demanding it is.

You will agree with me that when you tell one lie, to support it you will end up vomiting a hundred other lies. And when this goes on, slowly it becomes a regular behavior. Then this regular behavior becomes a strong habit. Habits later become part of your character. Character builds your lifestyle. And finally your lifestyle decides your destiny.

So I urge you today my friend, that you would sit back and introspect to see if lying is a virus in your life too. As the psalmist prayed, I would encourage you to pray, saying,

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, And lead in the way everlasting.

 (Ps 139:23,24)

If the Lord convicts you, would you humbly confess your weakness before Him? Do you choose to break free from the chains of lie?

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Deal with Temptation...!

Above all else, guard you heart for it is the wellspring of life. (Prov 4:23)

All of us face temptations of different kinds in different ways in our everyday life. The modern and quickly changing world around us throws so many things that fight for our love. If we are not careful and are not on our guard we will surely succumb. We need to deal with temptation right in the eye and at that very moment. Jesus has promised us a life of victory and hence we need not keep failing each time. Carefully read the ANTHEM approach to deal with temptation.

A – AVOID as much as is possible and reasonable the sights and situations that arouse unfitting desire. I say “possible and reasonable” because some exposure to temptation is inevitable. And I say “unfitting desire” because not all desires are bad. We know, when, they are unfitting and unhelpful and are on their way to becoming enslaving. We know our weaknesses and what triggers them. “Avoiding” is a Biblical strategy. “Flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness” (2 Tim 2:22). “Make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires” (Rom 13:14). You cannot stop a bird flying over your head but you definitely can avoid it from building a nest on your head!

N – Say NO to every lustful thought within five seconds. And say it with the authority of Jesus Christ. “In the name of Jesus, NO!” You don’t have much more than five seconds. Give it more unopposed time than that, and it will lodge itself with such force as to become almost immovable. Say it out loud if you dare. Be tough and warlike. As John Owen said, “Be killing sin or it will be killing you.” Strike fast and strike hard. “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” ( James 4:7). Do not give the devil a foothold!

T – TURN your mind forcefully toward Christ as a superior satisfaction. “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Col 3:2). Saying “no” will not suffice. You must move from defense to offense. Fight fire with fire. Attack the promises of sin with the promises of Christ. Lustful desires are deceitful. They lie. They promise more than they can deliver. The Bible calls them “passions of your former ignorance” (1 Pet 1:14). Only fools yield. “All at once he follows her, as an ox goes to the slaughter” (Prov 7:22).Instead we need to make efforts to “Put to death whatever belongs to out earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed” (Col 3:5). In our own strength we will not be able to fight it. We need to ask God for His grace. “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Cor 12:9). “It [the grace of God] teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age” (Tit 2:11).

H – HOLD the promise and the love of Christ firmly in your mind until it pushes the other desires out. “Fix your eyes on Jesus” (Heb 3:1,12:2). Here is where many fail - they give in too soon. They say, “I tried to push it out, and it didn’t work.” I ask, “How long did you try? How hard did you exert your mind?”. “In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood” (Heb 12:4). Hold it. Hold it. Hold it! Don’t let it go! Keep holding it! How long? As long as it takes. Fight! For Christ’s sake, fight till you win! Remember that God will help you in this fight. “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it” (I Cor 10:13).

E – ENJOY your relationship with Jesus, every moment of your life. One reason why we keep struggling in our fight against sin is because we are not equipped with God’s word and do not delight in it. Look at what the psalmist has to say- “How can a young man keep his ways pure? By living according to your word. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Ps 119:9,11). The psalmist delighted in God’s word (Ps 119:16,24,35,47,70,77,143,174). If you have only little taste for God’s word, these competing pleasures will triumph. It is very important that we meditate and memorize scripture. “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Ps 37:4).

M – MOVE into a useful activity away from idleness and other vulnerable behaviors. Lust grows fast in the garden of leisure. Find a good work to do, and do it with all your might. “Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord” (Rom 12:11). “Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord” (1 Cor 15:58). Abound in work. Get up and do something. Sweep a room. Hammer a nail. Write a letter. And do it for Jesus’ sake. You were made to manage and create. Christ died to make you “zealous for good deeds” (Tit 2:14). Displace deceitful lusts with a passion for good deeds. It is good to keep yourself occupied with constructive things which will enhance both the spiritual and secular aspects of your life.

Dear friend, the next time temptation knocks on your door raise the ANTHEM and with God to help, I am sure victory will be yours. I would encourage you to memorize the scriptures mentioned in this article and keep them written on your heart. You need to practice every day to fight temptations. If you fall, do not get discouraged for the Bible tells us that we have a high priest (Jesus Christ) who has been tempted in every way possible and was yet without sin, and He is able to sympathize with our weakness. He intercedes for us with the Father and is ready to help us stand up again.

Blessed are you when people insult you...

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matt 5:11,12

“…when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you…”

Jesus knew very well that things like this will happen to us. And that’s why He makes it a point to mention this. Each day we interact with many people who are around us – at our workplace, our home, our neighborhood etc. There are times when we are insulted and humiliated in front of people, and it pains us. People might do so many things against us which might hurt us every day. They might crush us with their false accusations.
Let’s take the scenario at our workplace,
There will be times when we are purposely set at naught by our team mates.
People might deliberately avoid us and constantly try to pull us down.
Our mangers and other authorities might not appreciate us but rather always find fault.
All the good things we do and all our hard work might go unnoticed.
Maybe we are not given our promotion and appraisal on time,unjustly, for selfish reasons.
These are few examples of what might be relevant to what Jesus is quoting.

“…because of me...”

All the above mentioned issues become significant only when they happen because of the fact that we have made a conscious decision to follow Jesus and it is evident to the people around us.
You might very well go through tough times in office because of your manager for not doing your work sincerely. For this you cannot quote this verse and say you are being persecuted. Instead when you stand for Jesus in your work place and refuse to do what is not right and for this reason you are persecuted then this verse is applicable.
It might be the issue of paying your tax honestly, not claiming bills incorrectly, not telling a lie to cover up missed deadlines, not using office stationery for personal work etc.
We need to be a testimony where ever we are an in everything we do. You never know, you might be the only Bible people at your workplace may ever get to read.

“Blessed are you…” “…Rejoice and be glad…”

Many a times when things go wrong when we stand for the truth, when people persecute us because we have chosen to stand for Jesus, we tend to get discouraged and disheartened. We forget the fact that when we stand for Jesus, He will never put us to shame. We need to trust Him and hold on. Jesus reminds us to rejoice and be glad because we are blessed.

“…great is your reward in heaven…”

Jesus tells us how our reward is in heaven. We might expect things to work-out here, down on earth. Most of the time, it might not. In spite of being honest and truthful in all that we do in office our managers might still not appreciate us but rather look down on us. But it’s perfectly alright. Let us not yearn to gain for earthly reward and recognition which are temporary. Let us fix our eye on what is eternal, that which no one can take away from us.

“…in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Jesus encourages us quoting how there have been people before us who have been treated this way. So we are not the only ones who are being persecuted, but many who have stood for Jesus, also faced the same. So let us not get discouraged but hold on to what is right. Let us stand for Jesus the way our fore-fathers did, even to the point of death.

Can anyone understand me?

At times life throws us into whirlpools of doubt and denial about our ‘self’ and individuality.

Times can be rough, our days so empty and parched; and this feeling of suffocating loneliness and questions like, “why are things like this happening only to me”, “life is just so unfair”, “things never work out for good for me” etc. grip us, binding us with fetters which can make us so handicapped and helpless.

“Life is not a bed of roses”… it’s so easy for all my elders to quote this.

But wait a min – does that mean my life always has to be such a bumpy road, that each time, I get tossed and turned, violent enough that I dread to tread this road?!! The moment I realize that no one seems to understand what I am going through, and can so easily only comfort saying “things will be fine, don’t worry”, loneliness curls around me like an ivy which most of the times is poisonous.

Loneliness pushes us into this unending maze of questions and self-reasoning- Why? Why?? Why???

It kills our conscious mind and dumps us into an endless loop of inferiority, insecurity and dis-satisfaction in life. Now this is when we tend to get into this faux reality of “no one understands me!” and it starts to sop up the life out of us.

Yeah, actually no one can understand us. We are unique and so different in everything from another individual. Though people might be able to pity us and share our sorrow, no one can really understand the actual pain we go through. And that’s why it takes somebody supernatural- God, to understand us completely. Remember He created us- designed the minute details of our being.

Every individual has some period in their life which is a span of extreme loneliness, at times – a very bitter experience. But then I believe for us who are believers, sometimes God does allow these times in our lives. Trust me, these are the most crucial moments in an individual’s life, because the choices he makes in these times has a rather huge consequence on the future course of his life.

Now the question we need to ask ourselves is – why am I feeling lonely?

Is it because I have no friends, or because of a breakup or because I am far away from my family and home, or is it because there is this vacuum in my life even though I have everything I want ???

“The loneliest moment in life is when, you have just acquired, that which you thought would give you the greatest pleasure, and it has let you down”

Each of ushave some desire in our lives which decides most of our actions in our everyday life. There is this longing within us to belong to someone, to achieve something, to be loved and have someone to whom we can express our love. These are basic emotional needs inside all of us and I am sure no one can deny these.

When one of these is not fulfilled, we feel a strange emptiness inside us which compels us to constantly strive to fulfill this need. Now this is where we need to be extremely careful, because we need to realize the fact that as human beings we will go to any extent to achieve this. And unless we look up to God for this we will definitely mess up.

“There is a God shaped vacuum in every human being which obviously only God can fill”

This is when we play ‘Jekyll and Hyde’. We know it’s not right but we can’t help but do it. The good that we want to do, we are unable to do and the bad that we do not want to do, we end up doing. And after doing it, guilt fills our heart and persecutes us. It makes us feel so bad that we begin to hate ourselves. But surprisingly, this does not stop us from doing the same old mistake after a while. Slowly we realize we are addicted to it. It ties our hands and makes us a slave, dragging us into the quick sand again and again, till we sink beyond recovery.

On the outside we are this happy, nice and smart looking individual – but living a lie on the inside. Because only, we know, the ‘Hyde’ we are on the inside, the secret life that no one else knows other than God. We hate it but cherish it owing to our addiction. A helpless feeling grips us when we think about it. Thus we seldom take time to even think about it and so rather than taking efforts to change and come out of it, we are content being a secret slave to our own defiant and lustful desires.

It might be different for different people. Maybe it’s an unwanted relationship that has enslaved you, a habit you are struggling with or a degraded and deteriorating lifestyle all together.

At the end of it all, we realize how all these things which we thought would give us the pleasure we wanted was only temporary and that we have been cheated, betrayed and fooled. This further wounds us and most of the times we let our wounds be wounded again. Yes, maybe the wounds may heal but remember the scars remain!

Deep inside I hear myself crying out – can anyone understand me? why am I messing myself up so much when I know I should not ? I hate to be ‘Me’.

My plastic smiles - does anyone really know that it’s fake!

Desperation pushes me to the edge but I still don’t know what to do.

But my friend, there is somebody who ‘can’ understand you. And this is what He has to say…

Maybe you are going through life’s loneliest moments right now, let me assure you of this, that “He does not cast away anyone who comes to Him”.

He says, I will never leave you nor forsake you.

“Before you were born, you were special to Me. I knew you before you were conceived in your mother’s womb. With My hands I fearfully and wonderfully created very detail that makes you unique. I knit you together. I saw you long before you ever existed. I watched everyday of your life. So I know you. I know where you have been, where you are and where you are going…

Android made simple...!

What is Android ?

Step into a cellphone store these past few years, and it’s hard to miss Android. From a surprise public announcement back in 2007, to occupying the smartphone top-spot today – depending on which analysts or researchers you talk to – Android has managed to carve itself a niche as the Apple iPhone’s key rival.

Google does search, what are they doing on my phone?

Google may be best known for its search engine – and its place as many people’s homepage – but the company has plenty of other side-projects going on. Android has grown to be one of the biggest, freely-available software for manufacturers to put on mobile phones, tablets, set-top boxes (such as for cable or satellite TV) and other gadgets.
The core Android technology was bought when Google acquired the company responsible – and secured the services of its co-founder Andy Rubin, who is now heading the whole project as a Google senior vice-president – back in 2005. Although rumors suggested the search giant was planning a so-called “Google Phone”, in actual fact the ambition was much bigger: a whole platform for phones cheap and expensive, as well as all manner of other electronics, to use.

Google’s argument is that by having a standardized, core platform, phones can be created quicker and manufacturers can spend less tinkering on software and thus make their handsets cheaper and more cost-effective. Meanwhile, those people creating apps – distributed through the Android Market, Google’s equivalent of the iPhone’s App store – have a much bigger target audience to appeal to.

So who’s involved?

Rather than go it alone, Google needed manufacturers (and the suppliers who provide them with components for cellphones) to sign up to the Android ethos. The end result is the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), a consortium of several companies including manufacturers, carriers, software providers, component suppliers and more.
Currently, Motorola, HTC, Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson are perhaps the best-known handset makers involved in the OHA, while network operators such as Sprint, Vodafone and T-Mobile are all onboard too. While collectively they’ve agreed to help drive Android and promote its adoption, they’ve also agreed not to break its consistency by tinkering too much with the software, despite the fact that Android is considered “open”.

What do you mean, open?

“Open”, or “open-source”, means that the underlying software which Android uses is accessible to anybody interested in taking a look. If you’re a manufacturer, that means you don’t have to ask Google (or indeed pay Google) to use Android on your gadget; if you’re creating software, you don’t have to pay to get access in order to make your apps work. Google’s engineers take responsibility for each Android update, but they include public submissions deemed worthy of being made official, suggestions from manufacturers and others, and everything is documented and released (eventually) online for all to see.
In that way, Android differs significantly from most of the other major mobile phone software platforms popular today. Apple won’t let anybody else use iOS as on the iPhone, for instance, and RIM won’t let anybody use its BlackBerry software. Microsoft gets paid by manufacturers wanting to use its Windows Phone software, and limits what changes can be made to the code.

So the experience on every Android phone is the same?

Not at all. While the core software may be the same, manufacturers are free to make all manner of tweaks to Android as they see fit. Considering the fast pace of the mobile phone segment today, those changes are often done to better differentiate one handset from another. They can vary from a few minor amendments so that the homescreen – the main page of the phone – looks different from everyone else’s, to broad changes that dig deep into the underlying software and make the handset significantly different to use.
That act of changing Android to suit an individual company’s market intentions has led to what’s known as fragmentation, or divergences to “pure” Android as Google releases it. Google has certain limits it insists manufacturers abide by if they want to use its premium software – such as the Gmail app, or getting access to the Android Market of third-party apps – which include the minimum specifications of the phone and what tweaks to the software have been made.
Even within those limits, however, manufacturers have pushed their own ideas and left big differences in the overall Android experience moving from device to device. Pick up an HTC-made Android phone, for instance, and it’s a very different look and feel to, say, a Motorola-made phone. Experts disagree on how dangerous this fragmentation will be to Android’s progression, though a rough rule of thumb is that the more changes a manufacturer makes, the longer it takes for them to push out software updates when Google amends the underlying Android code.

What’s next?

Although manufacturers have experimented with putting Android on devices other than phones, Google’s next “official” push is tablets. These have bigger touchscreens and so lend themselves to a different on-screen layout and features. Google has begun a separate strand of Android development, known as “Honeycomb”, which is intended specifically for tablets, as manufacturers like Motorola, HTC, Samsung, LG and others attempt to take on Apple’s iPad.

How old is the earth?

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).

The question of the age of the earth has produced heated discussions on debate boards, classrooms, TV, radio, and in many churches, Christian colleges, and seminaries. The primary sides are:

• Young earth proponents (biblical age of the earth and universe of about 6,000 years)
• Old earth proponents (secular age of the earth of about 4.5 billion years and a universe about 14 billion years old)

The difference is immense! Let’s give a little history of where these two basic calculations came from and which worldview is more reasonable.

Where did a young-earth worldview come from?

Simply put, it came from the Bible. Of course, the Bible doesn’t say explicitly anywhere, “the earth is 6,000 years old.” Good thing it doesn’t; otherwise it would be out of date the following year. But we wouldn’t expect an all-knowing God to make that kind of a mistake.

God gave us something better. In essence, He gave us a “birth certificate.” For example, using my personal birth certificate, I can calculate how old I am at any point. It is similar with the earth. Genesis 1 says that the earth was created on the first day of creation (Genesis 1:1–5). From there, we can begin calculations of the age of the earth.

Let’s do a rough calculation to show how this works. The age of the earth can be estimated by taking the first 5 days of creation (from earth’s creation to Adam), then following the genealogies from Adam to Abraham in Genesis 5 and 11, then adding in the time from Abraham to today.

Adam was created on Day 6, so there were 5 days before him. If we add up the dates from Adam to Abraham, we get about 2,000 years, using the Masoretic Hebrew text of Genesis 5 and 11.Whether Christian or secular, most scholars would agree that Abraham lived about 2,000 B.C. (4,000 years ago).

So a simple calculation is:

5 days
+ ~2000 years
+ ~4000 years
______________
~6000 years

At this point, the first 5 days are negligible. Quite a few people have done this calculation using the Masoretic text (which is what most English translations are based on) and, with careful attention to the biblical details, have arrived at the same time-frame of about 6,000 years, or about 4,000 B.C.

Where did the old-earth worldview come from?

Prior to the 1700s, few believed in an old earth. The approximate 6,000-year age for the earth was challenged only rather recently, beginning in the late 18th century. These opponents of the biblical chronology essentially left God out of the picture. Three of the old-earth advocates included Comte de Buffon, who thought the earth was at least 75,000 years old. Pièrre LaPlace imagined an indefinite but very long history. And Jean Lamarck also proposed long ages.

However, the idea of millions of years really took hold in geology when men like Abraham Werner, James Hutton, William Smith, Georges Cuvier, and Charles Lyell used their interpretations of geology as the standard, rather than the Bible. Werner estimated the age of the earth at about one million years. Smith and Cuvier believed untold ages were needed for the formation of rock layers. Hutton said he could see no geological evidence of a beginning of the earth; and building on Hutton’s thinking, Lyell advocated "millions of years".

From these men and others came the consensus view that the geologic layers were laid down slowly over long periods of time based on the rates we see them accumulating today. Hutton said:

The past history of our globe must be explained by what can be seen to be happening now. ... No powers are to be employed that are not natural to the globe, no action to be admitted except those of which we know the principle.

This viewpoint is called naturalistic uniformitarianism, and would exclude any major catastrophes like Noah’s Flood. Though some, such as Cuvier and Smith, believed in multiple catastrophes separated by long periods of time, the uniformitarian concept became the ruling dogma in geology.

Thinking biblically, we can see that the global Flood in Genesis 6–8 would wipe away the concept of millions of years, for this Flood would explain massive amounts of fossil layers.

Most Christians fail to realize that if there was a global Flood, it would rip up many of the previous rock layers and redeposit them elsewhere, destroying the previous fragile contents. This would destroy any evidence of alleged millions of years anyway. So the rock layers can theoretically represent the evidence of either millions of years or a global Flood, but not both. Sadly, by about 1840 even most of the Church had accepted the dogmatic claims of the secular geologists and rejected the global Flood and the biblical age of the earth.

After Lyell, in 1899, Lord Kelvin (William Thomson) calculated the age of the earth, based on the cooling rate of a molten sphere, at a maximum of about 20–40 million years (this was revised from his earlier calculation of 100 million years in 1862). With the development of radiometric dating in the early 20th century, the age of the earth expanded radically. In 1913 Arthur Holmes’ book, The Age of the Earth, gave an age of 1.6 billion years. Since then, the supposed age of the earth has expanded to its present estimate of about 4.5 billion years (and about 14 billion years for the universe).

Conclusion

When we start our thinking with God’s Word, we see that the world is about 6,000 years old. When we rely on man’s fallible (and often demonstrably false) dating methods, we can get a confusing range of ages from a few thousand to billions of years, though the vast majority of methods do not give dates even close to billions.

Cultures around the world give an age of the earth which confirms what the Bible teaches. Radiometric dates, on the other hand, have been shown to be wildly in error.

The age of the earth ultimately comes down to a matter of trust—it’s a worldview issue. Will you trust what an all-knowing God says on the subject or will you trust imperfect man’s assumptions and imaginations about the past that regularly are changing?

Thus says the LORD: “Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest? For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist,” says the LORD.
But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word (Isaiah 66:1–2).

Life is a gift

[a letter written by a brother to his younger siblings]


Life is a gift…
The Bible says that God breathed the breath of life into man and he became a living being.
You and I are blessed to have this breath of life, in us, which is God’s own.
If you can recall what you learnt at Sunday school and probably later in your quiet time,
God did not just straight away create man and gave him the world as it was.
God took time, and in His wisdom created beautiful things that we see today in our rich blue planet,
saw all that He had created was good and then…and then He created man in His own image.
I personally believe that God wants us to enjoy life, in its fullness and live happily.
But then it does not stop there, the important fact is that God intends that we enjoy life in the right way, within the limits which He in His Wisdom has set for us.
I am sure you will now ask me what do you mean by “enjoy life in the right way”?
You are either just entering your teenage or you are in your youth; If you are saying I don’t fit into either of these categories then you should be in life’s most exciting but also the most risky phase – adolescence.
Probably till now you have not come across situations which demanded you to make a big decision.
Maybe all the choices you have made so far were influence by your parents or made by them.
But my friend let me tell you that from this phase of life you will be called to make tough decisions.

From now on, in every step you take you might have to make a choice and mind you, these small choices you make will ultimately make a huge difference in your life.


The story is told of a young man who was unjustly sold as a slave into a foreign land. He was deprived of all the dreams that he had as a kid, all that he wanted to enjoy in life after he grew up. Things did not work out for him the way he had anticipated back at home, being the most loved in the family. He was young, handsome, strong, intelligent - all that any young man would want to be. But he lacked this one thing which you and I enjoy - freedom.
Being away from home, a slave in a foreign land, under a cruel master (in olden days slaves were treated worse than animals), I am sure he would have been frustrated and depressed.
And now that mom and dad are not around he would be free to do what he wants. He would have thought, when life is throwing all the bad things it’s got at him, why not just enjoy life the way he wanted.
It happened so that the lady of the house, where he was a slave, noticed him. She enticed him each day into making the wrong choice. But this young man, though so far away from home and with no one to watch over him, just did not give in. The lady could not stand it. She went to the extent of pulling him to bed. And this is where this young man takes his first but firm stand.


I want you to carefully pay attention to the reason he quotes for his decision. Would you turn with me to Gen 39:9 in your Bible?
“How can I sin against God?”
He was surely aware of this one fact that even if there was no one around God was watching and it is to God that he is accountable.



I am sure by now you’d have realized that I have been talking about Joseph. 


There are only two things that can be running in your mind now:
1. Not again! I have heard this story a million times!
OR
2. Hey I ain’t like that! I would not give in to such a big sin. This is will never happen to me!


My loving friend let me assure you of this, if not this situation, situations similar to this are on their way and you can’t avoid them. But yes, you too can take a stand and say NO, just like Joseph did.
The world we live in, changes very quickly. The modern culture that we are exposed to today is very deceptive. Things are introduced to us in a very subtle way. We would have hardly realized we were into it and by then, we would have been dragged way into the system.


The Bible reminds us that we should not give the devil a foothold. The devil is a roaring lion looking out whom to devour.


Ships are anchored far at the sea when they do not get permission to dock at the harbor. Usually the period they stay anchored at sea is pretty long. During this time corals and other crustaceans attach themselves to the hull (the base, lower part of the ship). Now if the crew does not carefully clean them off, they quickly spread and become powerful enough to even sink a mighty ship.
In life, there are many unwanted things which can so easily hook on to us, and most of the time, we are unaware of it. If we are not careful to constantly keep a check on our habits and lifestyle, we will fall prey to the enemy.


The devil with his crafty plans will target us who are young, in this area of life – relationship with the opposite sex. Unless we are very careful and are always on our guard we will fall.



As TobyMac in his song IRENE says, “please be aware of snakes, they come in all shapes and sizes to tempt you”, be very careful, “gentle as a dove and shrewd as a serpent “and watch and pray that you might not fall into temptation.


You need to take steps to I want you to keep the following as “Non-Negotiables”, meaning to say that at any cost, you should not compromise. Remember Daniel and his friends did not compromise even to the point of death and they were rewarded.


Non-Negotiables: (You can add to this list after consulting your parents/elders)

•  Never have just one person to whom you constantly associate. Make sure you do not do special favors for a single individual. 
• Do not touch or allow being touched! Always keep safe distance.
•  Avoid phone calls and text messages unless and until it’s very important. Share with your parents/mentors about all your friends.
•  Never be in a place or go out with the person of the opposite sex alone; be it elder or younger. 
• At any cost do not confide or share personal issues with the person from the opposite sex. 

• Riding along in a bike or travelling in a car alone with a person of the opposite sex is a strict NO! NO! However urgent the situation might be. When in doubt, if talking to someone is right or wrong, always ask your parents or mentors. Never assume. They always have better experience than us even if we feel they are old-fashioned.
• It is good to                                                                                     - Have a mentor (someone senior whom you can trust) e.g. Moses & Joshua
  - Be a mentor for someone younger than you are e.g. Paul & Timothy
  - Have a peer to whom you will be able to share with and will keep things confidential e.g. Paul and Barnabas
  NOTE: The other person involved in all these cases should be from the same sex. 

Unless we have a set of principles and convictions for our life we will sink for sure. The danger is that even before we realize we are sinking, we would have sunk to good depth.

It's a slow fade when you give yourself away
It's a slow fade when black and white have turned to gray
Thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid 
When you give yourself away People never crumble in a day 
The journey from your mind to your hands Is shorter than you're thinking
Be careful if you think you stand You just might be sinking 





Just as Daniel resolved not to defile himself with something as ordinary as food, I would encourage you too to take small but firm decisions which will please and honor God.


Remember,
when you take one small step towards honoring God He will take a hundred to honor you.
